Lately I've been especially enjoying photo sessions of children and families in their own homes and yards. Everyone is relaxed, wardrobe and accessories if needed are on hand and when we look back on photos we often want to see and remember the familiar day to day surroundings. This session was definitely one of those sessions and it was also my first meeting of their second, sweet baby girl.

For in-home sessions, a good amount of natural light is needed and almost any weather outside except for very dreary cloudy or rainy days will work. It is important to clear out some clutter and keep only the details that you wish to be recorded on display. You can prepare some for this ahead of time and when I arrive I will scout out areas in your home that are most suitable (generally due to lighting) and assist in final prepping of the areas. Think cozy arm chairs and sofas, beds, cribs, benches .... all near large light sources such as windows, sliding glass doors, open doorways ... You're on your way to memorable family photos at the family home.

an afternoon in sausalito -- Kim Binfield Photography -- Sausalito Family Photographer

Lovely scenery and family featured in this post from a family portrait session in Sausalito. We held the photo session in the late afternoon with the sun nearing the peaks of the Marin Headlands giving us nice low light and long shadows. We had a bit of wind at times but we powered through and came out with a fantastic set of proofs. I took a mix of posed and candid shots with scenery including the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay, and even the side of a shed and some dirt. We even fit in time to snap a few pics for Mom and Dad to use as head shots for Facebook profiles and the like. Here are some of my favorites of the afternoon ...

Meet Ziggy! Weighing in at just under 7 pounds, Ziggy is shy and sweet and settling in well with his new family. He was adopted from the Marin Humane Society in August.

Summer came and went and the days are growing colder and shorter quickly. What's been happening over this way? Life and lots of it! My two girls started new chapters in their lives (and thus mine too!). My oldest started kindergarten and my youngest started preschool. They both adore school and their teachers. I am starting to miss their baby days more than I thought I would and at the same time I am also gaining time to find "me" again which has been very welcomed.

Today's photos are from a date night that my husband and I went on in Sausalito at the end of summer. A brilliantly clear day with fantastic views of the San Francisco city skyline and bay. Photos taken with my phone using the Retro Camera app which is lots of fun!

the forest sessions -- Kim Binfield Photography -- Mill Valley Family Children Baby Photographer

What beauty we are surrounded by here in Marin County, California -- the Redwood forests, blue ocean and bays, crisp white fog, golden grasses and hills... For this on-location photo session the mother had pink tulle dresses for her two girls and we wanted a fairytale like quality to the photos. We chose a Redwood grove for the portrait session on a bright and clear morning. I loved the look and feel of the resulting images so much, I had to go back for a "session" there with my own girls a couple weeks later!

Summer weather is here and lovely. I am now booking holiday sessions and general family and child portrait sessions for dates in August, September and October. I'd love to discuss your session wishes!

This year I've gotten to meet some very sweet babies and their siblings too. These two girls will have a lot of fun together in the years to come I know. I've seen it with my girls, and also with my sister and I.

My mom once bought my sister and I a small, decorative sign that read, "My Sister, My Friend." We use to joke about it a bit then, but our Mom was right - my sister truly is my best friend. Almost not a day goes by that we don't chat on the phone with a rundown of our days - now each with two daughters of our own.

Dad's Day

Today I'm sending Father's Day greetings to all dads and grandads for this Sunday's big day.

As my daughters grow, it is wonderful to see how my husband's role changes and grows along with them. At the moment, he is enjoying legos with my older daughter and both daughters have been enjoying family projects with him including bread making, gardening and taking care of our first family pet, Hannah the fish. Reading is also something my husband and girls enjoy together, and have since they were born. My husband is an avid reader and works in the publishing industry, thus reading and books are definitely up there in importance around here. Today's photo is a recent shot of them together being their silly-with-dad selves.

I also enjoy getting to see new dads and moms too at newborn and baby photo sessions. Most are so calm - I don't remember my husband and I being as calm as many of my new parent clients are!

Sneak peek at Portrait Classroom app for iPhone - Kim Binfield Photography

It truly is, we promise, getting close now! The iPhone version of our app, Portrait Classroom: Baby and Child Photography Tutorials, is nearing completion.

We're submitting it to Apple this week for approval and then, fingers crossed, once approved it will be available for download on the iTunes app store.

Portrait Classroom for iPhone is very closely based on the successful iPad version. It has all of the same content - the same tutorials, images and text. It is simply configured to fit the iPhone screen. Stay tuned for its debut ... a wealth of insider secrets and training, even more compact and ready to take with you on the go!

Happy Mother's Day to all

Today as we celebrate Mother's Day I am posting a favorite picture of myself and my two daughters. It was taken by my husband when my youngest was four months old. I will always remember her, in part thanks to the moment being documented in this picture, as the sweet little ball of white puff she was that day in that dress and my older daughter at just over two years old with her personality blooming. I delight in being their "Mama", as they call me, and I am growing into my role each day learning more about them and about myself too along the way. Now granted, it's not all easy all the time... thus today we get to take time out and be celebrated ourselves. Enjoy your day of being doted upon!

What two years looks like -- San Francisco Bay Area Family and Child Photographer

Two years. How to photograph it and what changes take place in that time?

Below are photos taken exactly two years apart of my girls in the same spot. My two girls are also two years apart in age. In the first photo they are 2 years old and newborn and in the second photo they are 4 and 2 years old. We all know they grow up quickly but there is no denying just how quickly that is in this series.

This is a project you can do yourself. Take a photo of your loved ones, pets, trees in your yard or local environment in each season, whatever it may be in the same spot over a period of time. You will photographically mark the progression of time and likely have a zen-like thought or two along the way.

Studio look -- Maternity Photos Marin Photographer

This post is Part II from this session. In addition to the beautiful photos on location in their home, we took some shots also in their home using the same window light with my portable backdrop set up. It simply consists of a light weight backdrop stand, clips and a black backdrop. I can set this up in almost any room at a client's home that receives at least a decent amount of window light. The look is similar to what you would get with a softbox and expensive lighting set up, yet it is quick to set up, light weight and low cost.

Here are the portraits we created. For the client, this adds a completely different look and feel to their main set of session images - basically like having two sessions in one!

Sibling on the way -- Maternity and Pregnancy Photographer in Marin

I love the images from this session last weekend. Lovely family with a toddler boy who has the bluest of blue eyes and is definitely ready to play with his soon-to-be sibling :) This session was at the client's home with beautiful natural light from their large north and west facing windows.

During this same session we also took photos with my portable backdrop and stands. Look for a post with those images in the next day or so.

I also want to say thank you to my clients who let me share in a bit of their lives and take photos for them of their memorable events and growing families. It means a lot to me and I appreciate each of you!

Three days new - San Francisco and San Diego Newborn Photographer

While I'm back now in the San Francisco Bay Area, August and September were filled with many family celebrations in San Diego. There were milestone birthdays and anniversaries and the arrival of my second niece. We were able to visit for these family events and I got to meet and photograph my newborn niece, pictured here when she was just three-days-old ... or new as I think is more fitting! I'm so glad I got to meet and spend time with you little sweetie and I'm enjoying hearing stories from your Mom as you grow.

I am also enjoying watching my own girls grow up day by day right now, very quickly! More on this in an upcoming post. I've photographed them together in the same spot as a newborn and age 2 and last week at ages 2 and 4. AMAZING changes of course. You won't believe just how much though until you see it.... :)

Fun and fanciful family photo session -- San Francisco and Marin Family Photographer

I knew when Mom showed up with fantastic, colorful high heel shoes and her daughter with candy apple red shoes and a multicolored beaded necklace that she chose herself, that we would have a fun session. Dad and the family dog also did their part to complete the look of these animated and endearing family portraits.

As a custom, boutique photographer I accept a limited number of sessions each month to enable me to provide the top level of care and attention to each client. The last date for holiday sessions this year is November 14. Weather in the Bay Area will be turning colder soon, thus outdoor sessions are best held now through early October.

A few more images from this serene baby's photo session. The second image is the full frame version of the photo in the last post. One of my favorite things about photography is composition and composing photos. Whether it be in camera while taking a photo or during post production, I love seeing how changes in composition or cropping can change an image so dramatically and give it an entirely new look and feel.

To book your newborn session, please contact me during the last few months of your pregnancy. Newborn sessions are best between 5 and 12 days old. They can be done later but I will make every effort to fit in newborn sessions within this early time frame to capture their tiny, precious details for you.

Newborn Photo Sessions -- Kim Binfield Photography

Sleeping like a baby. Don't you just love that cute little baby nose, cheeks, and fingers. Sigh...

This sweet baby boy was actually three-months-old but he's still got that tiny, fresh newborn look about him- especially when we were able to catch him sleeping. For babies to have a true newborn look, sessions are recommended during a baby's first 5 to 12 days. However, this photo is a good example of how you can sometimes still get away with it down the road a bit :) More baby photos from this session to follow in a later post.

Spring is in the air, let's share -- Tiburon Newborn and Child Photographer

We woke to a beautiful fresh, blue sky and there were still rain drops clinging to the branches. I *had* to stop everything and grab my camera for a couple quick pictures while getting ready for the day with my girls.

Red Wagon and Pink Tutu - Bay Area Family Photographer

All girl, with a little kick added! This was my first time to photograph this spirited and sweet one and a half year old. We employed her Radio Flyer All Terrain Wagon during part of the photo session at her home which brought lots of fun and smiles (and containment as an added bonus!). Sweet Baby Boy - Tiburon Photographer

His parents, though first time parents, came over with an air of easy going confidence and calm that amazed me! They are doing such a good job in their new roles and he is one lucky little boy. What I'm Up To - Marin and San Francisco Portrait Photographer

Welcome to 2010. It's a brand new year and I'm busily working away in Tiburon, during these very rainy weeks, on my ..... brand NEW website! Yes, I'm very excited about it. The site will be going live within the next couple weeks.

I'm learning all kinds of geeky computer things. This teeny tiny image is called a favicon: I created it using a part of my logo in Photoshop. It is a small image that appears up on the internet browser tab next to Kim Binfield Photography when you're viewing my new site.

This holiday season I'm thankful for a wonderful 20o9. We celebrated first and third birthdays for our girls and my husband and I have been busy and fulfilled with both work and family life. Last month we were able to take the girls to Paris (ok, admittedly I was a driving force behind this!). Showing them Paris was one of the items on my "List of things to do in life." They of course won't remember much but they were there, with me and their Dad and they will have photos (ok a ton of photos) to look back on when they're grown.

Today's post is from a newborn session a couple months ago. This newborn's mama had the most adorable rose bloom bloomers for her newborn from the recently opened children's store Koze Beginnings in Tiburon, California. One look at these tiny bloomers and I knew they'd make for adorable photos! We had a lovely and quick session in wonderful morning light with mama, big sister and newborn baby.

My youngest is now a one-year-old! Here are two photos of her. One as a precious, sleeping newborn and one as the sweet and fun-loving girl she has grown to be in her first year. Her older sister got in on the documenting as well. Pictured here at age two, she is now a big three-year-old.

Portrait Tip: Photograph your child or have them photographed in or on a piece of furniture (sofa, chair, table, bed, crib) within your home at newborn, 3 month, 6 month and one year milestones (or as often as you like) to document their development in these early days.

Also today a few ramblings from me... Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is one of the loveliest spots I know. I enjoy traveling over the bridge to spend a day at any number of spots there: the Japanese Tea Garden, Botanical Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, de Young Museum, the newly reopened California Academy of Sciences, and just general wandering. As many of you know in addition to San Francisco, I have a soft spot for France and all things French. This particular area of the park where we took portraits reminds me of Parisian gardens- especially Luxembourg Garden- with its green benches and rows of trees. Ah... dreaming in French again!

A sneak peek from a session at Baker Beach in San Francisco. This family and I enjoyed a sunny morning at the beach with no fog *can you believe it*! Here are some of my favorites ... I especially love the little boy taking steps with his parents. He had just recently started walking and it was adorable to watch.

Cropping and Print Sizes 101

Today a crash course in how cropping sometimes changes the look and composition of your photos. Also a visual guide showing examples of various print sizes and giving you the go ahead to dream big! The print sizes guide is obviously better seen in person at actual size, but together I'm hoping the Print Sizes Guide and Cropping Guide below will be helpful.

The Crop Guide below assumes that your proof is full frame at a 4 inch x 6 inch ratio. Proofs from my studio are all sized at this ratio unless otherwise specified. Thus if you want a print of exactly what you see in your proof, you'll need to order a 4x6, 6x9, 8x12, 16x24 or 20x30 image. A 5x7 print will trim a little bit of your photo off, an 11x14 print will trim a little bit more off and so on. (Disclaimer: There is an error in the below guide- 20x30 is the same ratio as 4x6. It is depicted wrong on the guide.)

Newborn Photography

Portraits today from a recent newborn photo session. I enjoy getting to photograph babies and be a part of a new family's early days. This sweetheart, who slept peacefully through most of her session to our delight, was just 8 days old and had already warmed everyone's hearts.

I'm sure she's grown leaps and bounds since our session. Thank you again baby and family.

One portrait; three looks

I'm in the middle of editing a few photo shoots at the moment. I've had maternity, family, and sibling portrait sessions along with some photos at a local preschool. I can't wait to share with you in the next few blog posts.

First up is from a session held with one of my dearest friends that I met in Kindergarten, yes that is over 30 years ago now!! The family put up with cold Marin County winds and a touch of fog but we were still able to snap up some beautiful portraits. Here is one of my favorites and it's a good example of how one photo can have many different looks. More from this session and the other sessions in my next posts...

Sunny days are here! In these pictures of my older daughter, I brought the shell along as a prop. When giving it to her I realized I had never shown her how you can hear ocean sounds in a shell. It is little things like this that make being a mom a wonderful journey for me.

With Mother's Day approaching May 10th, today I'm posting a couple maternity session photos. Maternity sessions can have a studio look as shown here either at my home or at yours with my portable studio set up. Portraits can also be taken on location amongst trees and grasses or along sandy beaches. Whatever you think up, we'll create beautiful images for you to have of your pregnancy.

Maternity sessions are best scheduled for your 7th and 8th month of pregnancy.

Commercial Photography

Today I'm posting some commercial photography I did for a new gourmet wine and food destination, Prima Palate, in Tiburon, California. The owners have created a fabulous space and gathered up a selection of wonderful goodies and indulgences. You can sample wines and enjoy cheese plates at their wine bar or outdoor terrace. I had a lovely time snapping up images of their beautiful products and shop!

Tiburon is located in Marin County a few miles north of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge- a little further north than Sausalito. You can also take a ferry from San Francisco to Tiburon for an idyllic afternoon of shopping and strolling and then a fabulous dinner viewing back at the San Francisco skyline.

New Baby Sister Portraits

New baby sister is on the scene! At 8 months old this little girl is at such a fun age-- and she is just a few weeks older than my little one. We were able to capture all that makes babies this age especially sweet and fun. She is almost on the move and is exploring and learning at every opportunity.

I've had the pleasure of photographing her older sister a number of times and was very excited to have this little one's first portrait session. Thank you Mom and baby and big sister too for a fun day!

"I just want one good photo of my two daughters together," said the Mother of these two girls prior to our session. Sound familiar? I think we did just that, except we created not just one photo but many photos of the sisters together at the park. It took some creative posing, songs, games, and a teeny bit of bribery with chocolate eggs, but we got the job done!

Beach Portraits: The Finale

Sunny and bright and cheerful! This beach cutie was a pleasure to photograph and together we created some artful images that will preserve family memories and youthful energy. There really isn't anything cuter than girls in summer dresses at the beach...

It was my second time to photograph this little girl. She was a winner in my 2008 favorites post wearing a dress with strawberries and grinning right at the camera. That leap from one-year-old to two-year old is a big one! This time she was walking, running, exploring, jumping and dancing around. Thank you mom and daughter for joining me at the beach. These beach portrait sessions were a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to beach sessions in Marin and San Francisco this spring and summer. Rodeo Beach, Baker Beach ... here we come!

This San Diego session was brothers at the beach. These two definitely kept me on the move! Lots of running up and down the beach and just a few moments of stillness while exploring rocks or sand made for lots of great pics. Thanks for meeting up with me! Next up joining me was a couple with their two-week-old and an almost two-year-old children. It was my second time to photograph their two-year-old, this time with enough hair for pigtails :) She was a winner in my 2008 favorites post sporting polka-dots. My how they grow in just one year!! Beach portrait sessions!! I travel to San Diego, my hometown, a couple times a year to be with family and catch up with friends. This time I was also able to work in a run of portrait sessions at Carlsbad beach. I ran the sessions in the beautiful light of the late afternoons and in my next few posts I'll be sharing the sneak peeks from these sessions!

Movie Making 101

Kim Binfield Photography is now showing in the movies!! Well, ok, we've got our portfolio of portraits being broadcast on YouTube.com but we're still pretty pleased about it :) See our movie here on YouTube or play it on the video screen below:

You too can have your images (of your family, flower photos, travels, teapot collection, whatever you can think up!) made into a "movie" and then broadcast on YouTube. There are many ways to do this, but this is how I did it...

I selected portraits from the last few years of Kim Binfield Photography that I wanted to feature in my movie. The portraits were digital photos in .jpeg format. I also created a few .jpegs in Photoshop for the title and end pages to display the name of my business and website and treated them just like the portrait images when making the movie (basically a slideshow).

Next, I browsed the help files on YouTube and found this article that took me through the process step by step. My computer happened to come with Windows Movie Maker software on it, though there are a number of similar programs that will do the same thing for you. YouTube has numerous other help articles you can also refer to until you are saying "That's a Wrap" on your film too. Happy Movie Making!!

Well ok they're not Oscar winners, but they're my very favorite photos from 2008 portrait sessions! I enjoyed looking back through the cute newborns, babies, kids and families that I had the pleasure of photographing last year. We had many wonderful sessions at beaches, parks, urban settings, and homes. I also couldn't resist including my most loved photos of my daughters from 2008, look for them in the last two photos :)

As a mom of two girls, you're in for some postings of my kiddos from time to time here. Sorry, there's just no way around it though I'll try and hold back... a bit :)

This photo of my daughter's feet, that my hubby indulged me by assisting with yesterday, was one I'd been waiting to take! I bought these super cute pants from Naartjie before she was born and knew they'd make for adorable photos. See if you agree, cute?

Sessions will be held at Belvedere Park (not on the play structures but in the surrounding grass areas). Mini sessions are for children only and this location is best for children old enough to sit up. You can choose how you wish to split up your mini session - one child, two children, etc... it's their 20 minutes of fame! If you would like 20 minutes per child then you will need to book multiple mini sessions or opt for a full session on another date. Why a mini session? Mini sessions are a perfect fit for budget minded moms and dads as there is a lower initial investment and for when you wish to have updated photos but aren't in need of a full session yet. It is a casual, low key way to snap up some sweet smiles in a playful, unassuming atmosphere. Full sessions differ as you receive a one hour personal session at your home or location of your choice, there are 30-40 session images created and they can be for families.
